On July 9, Windler celebrated the grand opening of 1881 Park, a community gathering space named for the original homestead that once stood on this land and was established in 1881. Roughly 200 guests turned out across the event’s VIP and public sessions, making it Windler’s biggest community moment to date.
A Park Built on Its Own History
1881 Park isn’t just named after the homestead; it’s built from it. Reclaimed wood, metal, and brick salvaged from the original structures were worked directly into the park’s construction, a detail that turns a simple community amenity into something with real roots. The park’s two new anchor gathering spots, Anna’s Place and The Coop, both take their names from that same history, and a barn-owl-inspired playground feature gives the park’s heritage story a friendly, permanent face for the community’s youngest residents.

A Family Moment, Not Just a Ribbon-Cutting
Members of the Windler family — descendants of the original homesteaders — attended the grand opening to celebrate alongside the community. Their presence turned what could have been a standard groundbreaking-style event into something more personal: a reminder that this land has a story that predates every home being built on it, and that the people who lived that history were there to see its next chapter.
Earned Coverage, Built on a True Story
Aurora TV produced a dedicated segment on the opening, “Historic 1881 Park Opens at Windler,” which aired July 22. The coverage went beyond a quick event recap, digging into the park’s connection to Colorado history, the original 1881 homestead, and the new gathering spaces built in its honor — with Aurora TV linking directly back to Windler’s website in their related coverage.
A local influencer also captured the celebration in a reel that carried the park’s opening well beyond the guests who attended in person, adding organic social reach on top of the earned broadcast coverage.
What’s Next
1881 Park is now part of Windler’s regular community programming, with Winnie the Welcome Wagon making appearances there throughout the summer, offering pup cups and on-site pet photos to keep the park’s dog-friendly identity front and center. Momentum from the grand opening continues to feed community storytelling heading into the fall.
